We take asbestos testing in Toronto very seriously. Cutting any corners or doing anything less than a perfect job is worse than unprofessional—it’s dangerous.
We recently came across a story of one wildly irresponsible company that paid millions to keep asbestos problems quiet.
In the spring of 2005, Georgia-Pacific Corp faced nearly $1 billion in liability from a product it hadn’t made in nearly three decades: a putty-like building material, known as joint compound, containing asbestos.
They were named in more than 60,000 legal claims and hired consultants (known for their defense work) to conduct studies, quietly, while keeping key information hidden from plaintiffs.
Georgia-Pacific paid 18 scientists a collective $6 million to work on asbestos litigation studies, while working “in the strictest confidence” with all information generated.
Last June, a New York appeals court found reason to believe Georgia-Pacific had perpetrated such a scheme and ordered the company to hand over the documents to a judge for in camera inspection.
What exactly is going to happen to Georgia-Pacific? It’s still unclear. However, this beyond careless, as this company appears to have put thousands of people in dangerous contact with asbestos. Toronto homes and businesses should be safe from asbestos, just like everyone else in the world.
